SCHALECO VE301GW
#1
Hallo,

Congratulations ! A rare model of the German Volksempfänger. It looks pretty fine and I hope that the tubes are really ok, such as promised.

For info: the V-type tubes often caused problems because their heaters are known to get temporary inner filament disconnection.
So many of the radios with V-type tubes got re-fitted with another tube type.

The radio is at the Frankfurt airport waiting for its flight. I hope the seller packed it well so the tubes don't break. I like the radios on Ebay.de, the challenge is finding sellers who will ship to the USA. The VE radios are hard to find and expensive in the USA, and the weight is low enough to make shipping reasonable.

I like researching the history of old machines, so the VE radios have the history and a lot of information available. I think I will collect more of them.

On another site I read a warning about URDOX resistors in the VE301GW. Do they have Uranium resistors? I don't see anything like that in the pictures. That is one thing I hate about technical hobbies, toxic waste. I had to deal with asbestos. I had to pay $500 to dispose of PCB's. I don't want to have to deal with uranium waste.

Stay calm about the Urdox, Steve.
This question has been discussed among German radio collectors a hundred times. As long as you do not intend to swallow an Urdox, there is no need to frighten about. Urdox resistors have been used in thousands of German "GW" (= AC/DC) radios, not only in the 1930's.

BUT: to my knowledge, this Volksempfänger-type does not have an Urdox-tube inside; it's successor does have one

The radio survived the trip from Berlin, and arrived a few days ago. Seems to be in good condition. I will have to spend more time inspecting it before giving it power.

Congratulations Steve! The VE is in a good condition, even the original speaker cloth and all tubes are still in place. I think you`ll with restoration a lot of fun.

Thank you Anton. It even has all the original wires, and cardboard back wall, although the back wall was broken and repaired.

Danke Anton.

Congrats Steve, the VE looks in very good condition, as said before. I'm looking for a VE for some time, but still have no luck, because I don't want to pay Gold for it.
I wish you much success while restoring.

Danke Philipp.
Thank you Philipp.
I found a date code of 20.10.34 on the case. I measured the capacitors and they are with in 20%, measured in circuit. There is a large capacitor that seems to have been added.

Mehrere Kondensatoren mit "CM" als Einheit markiert. Was ist das Gerät? Was wäre die Umwandlung in Farad sein?

Several capacitors are marked with "CM" as the unit. What is this unit? What would be the conversion to Farads?

Looks like there were modifications to the radio. The ground connection was removed. I will have to do some work to restore the original circuit. The resistors need to be replaced, 50k ohm measures 63k. Any advice on how to keep the look of the old resistors when replacing?

63 instead of 50k might be totally acceptable. I'd replace the really defective parts then, as you already checked the capacitors, try turning the radio on. You might want to use the BULB when first trying it, in case there is some serious problem you didn't find yet.
Good luck!

Thank you Uli. I gave it some power with a light bulb tester. Nothing caught on fire. It hums. The filament of the VY1 glows. The filaments of the other 2 tubes can't be seen. Both measure about 180 ohms. I here sound, so I assume the VL1 is working. I think I will have to disassemble, replace capacitors, and restore the original circuit. There were some modifications.

Sounds good!
Try providing full voltage and connect an antenna - 3-6m of wire will be enough. Don't forget to connect ground to it's connector! Then you might already be able to get some radio stations (maybe only during the night, depending on your situation). Try connecting the antenna to the different connectors to find out which one works best for you.
You know how to operate a VE or got a manual?
And be careful, you might have full mains voltage on the chassis! Better always connect it using a transformer.

Uli
